I have several family members with AS like traits or other disorders, so I convinced that it's mostly genetic, at least most cases.
Perhaps there is a catalyst that can make the symptoms worse, but I see know conclusive proof of it.
I'm sure there are snake oil salesmen trying to find miracle cures for it just like anything else though.
I am still all for vaccines and think banning them is a very, very bad decision for public health.
In my grandparents generation, who grew up in the 20's and 30's, families would often have several children, and in most cases, at least one of their siblings would die from childhood diseases that are now almost completely preventable with vaccines.
That far negates and real or imagined threat of people getting autism from vaccines.
Like I said, in most cases I think you are born with it, although in some rare cases maybe, and I said only maybe there is a catalyst that can make it more severe.
I just got genetic test results (a lot of it posted on my own journal). If anyone wants to look at mine, they can. I have the markers on chromosome 1 and 7 for Asperger Syndrome and Speech Developmental Delay.
I have several dozen autism and autism-related conditions and their genetic markers on hand. I have a variety of risks for a few of them.
If I could spare the extra cash I would love to get my DNA tested or mapped. I'm sure one day it might be just a common procedure although I would hope there would be laws to prevent people from potential discrimination because of it.
It seems to be more common in people with certain ethnicities as well, although not exclusive to them. On the forums, it's seems the most common in people of northern European ancestry.
Nobody in my family has been diagnosed with Aspergers, but aspie like traits and other psychological conditions are fairly common.
