I was dx as a little kid as having autism back when Asperger's wasn't known over here. I wasn't told until many years later when a cousin announced at the funeral of her dead father that I "used to have autism" as a child. Dad confirms the story except he adds that he told whoever the evaluator was that his child is "not retarded" and walked out. In a way, I am thankful for that because I didn't wind up in special ed classes. Mainstreaming and inclusive education were both unheard of at the time ( ... )
