It's not just boys who are autistic

An article in the UK's Guardian newspaper (G2 section),  by Joanna Moorhead.  I havn't found a URL yet,  but I'll post one if I find it.

Anyone done a male v female aspie poll?

I'm a woman Aspie dxed earlier this year. My oldest daughter is spectrum-y and my oldest son is classically autistic. My son's traits are flamingly autistic, but my daughter's are much more subtle and she's undiagnosed because we homeschool.

She thinks she's an Aspie though.

If she later wants or needs an official dx (I liked getting mine as a validation, for instance) I'll be more than happy to help her get an assessment.

I would be interested in knowing the male/female ratio of this community.

I sometimes get the impression that females predominate here, though I could be wrong, as I don't always find it easy to tell who is which unless they really spell it out. I have had some jaw-dropping moments when I realise that someone who I had thought for months was of one sex suddenly reveals themself to be of the other!

(I suppose finding it hard to identify sex is a widespread online phenomenon - but I wonder whether it might be particularly notable amongst aspies - perhaps they present themselves and their ideas/opinions in a less sexually differentiated way???)

If females *do* predominate here, that is quite interesting in view of the received wisdom that male aspies are so much in the majority.

(Although it always has to be remembered that Livejournal-member aspies could be an unrepresentative subset of aspies as a whole.)

Maybe someone should start a poll; I fear I personally lack the know-how to do so.

I'm relieved to see a recent crop up in specifically autistic female orientated articles and whatnot.

I have two autistic sons and an infant daughter. I'm thinking if she shows signs of ASD at all, getting a dx for her won't be a problem just because of family history. (I also have my share of Aspie traits.)
