...since my cell phone is now our main phone, and it's ringing so much more often nowadays, especially with calls from realtors, inspectors, family members, the school, friends, etc etc etc

I have EXACTLY the same problem! I keep mine in my tightest pocket (usually back pocket) and put it on vibe, then ring. Usually the vibe gives me enough time to get it out and open before it rings, and if not, at least I've been warned. Loose pockets won't work.
I have my phone on a wrist strap, and thus it makes a much easier alarm to hit the snooze button on without pissing off nearby folk as well as having a consistent alarm to wake up to wherever I happen to be sleeping at the time.
Of course, I like my ringtone better than I do my DORM phone at least... although that's a bit more of 'fear' conditioning than anything else.
Though... I don't go out much, and if I have my phone on my desk (which I usually do), the vibrating against the table scares the crap out of me. That PVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVP PVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVP when it moves... makes me nearly throw up in horror o-o
Does your phone maybe have a setting with a gradual increase in volume?
I'm kinda the same way about the vibrate function. One moment, it's an inanimate object. The next, it's pvvvvvvvvvvping across the table...or screaming at me. o_O Augh! ;)
Someone else just mentioned that some phones have a gradually increasing volume setting. I don't think mine has one, but I may be upgrading soon - I'll certainly look into finding a phone with that feature.
