This is embarassing, but although I have reached a high-level of education, a bachelors and hopefully a masters and I am reasonably intelligent, I am made to feel as if I am mentally ill because I cant do this simple things. I cannot keep a house clean and tidy, I cant use an iron, I cant cut a steak, partially because of coordination problems with ( Read more... )

VERY good ideas!

Pat, struggling with clutter herself. (IF the problem is too many possessions, Freecycle.org IS your friend.)

P.S. To keep the trash cans you have in every room from getting nasty, line them with supermarket bags and when those get full, tie them off and toss them in the main dumpster. Works wonders.

I do this too with the grocery bags, saves time and I feel like I'm recycling a bit. I just hang extras on the back of the door / handle.

I used to do that after I saw the janitor on campus doing it but I stopped again because I threw away too many nasty bags that got stuff leaked on them through the trash bag being used.

I totally understand where you are coming from as I am not the most organized perosn myself. My parents came in recntly and helped organize me again.

I live alone which is probably best since then there are nmo roommates to claim about the mess. My parents are like how can you live live this ... get organized. I unfortuantly, have troubel deciding what to keep and what to throw out. I am ashamed of it to an extent also but I figure nobody has to come into my place and if they do well they are going to have to accept my messiness.

I also have problems with using an iron. I don ot find it easy to use it and it takes a long time to use it properly.... so I take my clothes to the cleaners when they need to be ironed.

oh and as to cutting a steak, I was taught long ago to hold the fork sideways, as opposed to the regular forward way and it works..

Oh, and just because you have a degree, does not mean that this organization stuff has to easy for you. Believe me I have two degrees. You have a disability.

I'm a slob. Or, more politely put, a clutter bug.

This web site has a system. And the system is completely and utterly modifiable. And, when I use it, it works. And it's FREE.

And the system is completely and utterly modifiable.

Except she insists that you have to do her four things every day. Dress to your shoes, make your bed, shine your sink. and . . . I forget what the other one was.

She kept insisting that you had to get this stuff done before moving on to the rest of the system so I never moved on because my husband is still in the bed when I get up so I can't make it and I don't get dressed unless I'm going out because it makes more laundry to get dressed and my husband stays up much later than I do so it's impossible to wake up to a shiny sink (Fly Lady said to have him put his night dishes in a bin under the sink but that's where my clothes washer is and my husband said he refused to do it because it would attract bugs.)

When I couldn't accomplish her "tiny little baby steps" I gave up on moving on to the grown-up steps.

The only thing I identify with on here is not being able to cut a steak. I always thought it was my left-handedness, but I also can't cut bread without botching it, or cheese, or whatever needs cutting...though I try. lol...if I"m with someone I just say I'm a mess and get on with it, but usually my parents instinctively step in and help. (We eat dinner together a lot as they live right down the road).

Crazy huh? I never considered it an Aspie thing, just a left-handed thing...but maybe it's an eye-hand coordination thing. Who knows? Don't feel alone though.
