Oh wow this is awesome. I'm really impressed. It's interesting seeing Cat & Petyr's relationship as it played out from his POV. Now that I think about it, duty is such a huge part of Catelyn's personality that it makes sense that there is ambiguity there -- did she simply just not love Petyr, or is it that duty wouldn't allow her to love Petyr, so she didn't? It really gives Petyr some wiggle room in terms of interpreting her actions and allows him to believe in a delusion. This didn't really occur to me until I read this, though, so thank you for the very insightful fic!
I think Petyr did feel like he could be Cat's rescuer, and that clearly transferred over to Sansa (only he has partly ARRANGED for her bad situation which is ... creepy and sad ... ), so part of him had to believe that Cat didn't really want her fate decided for her, deep down. That shows how they're different people, Petyr's a romantic (rail against the system! follow your heart!) and Cat's such a practical person, and Petyr assumed she was like himself, I suppose. I mean, who wouldn't be, other than square people ;D
One thing I like about Martin's characters is even when you disagree with them you can see where they come from. Petyr totally trufax believed that Catelyn slept with him, at least until Lysa's crazy Ranty McRant turn at the end of ASOS, so there's probably a sense of Cat using him and then dumping him, or at least being indecisive herself. He seems so bitter about "Family, Duty, Honor" when they meet up.
I love this--interesting seeing everything from Petyr's POV. I think you show his latching onto any ambiguity that might help his delusions along very nicely.
Wee thanks! There has to be reason for him to believe, otherwise he's kind of a mustache-twisting cartoon, and I really think there's more to him (though his romanticism is still ... extreme).
