we're in austin! doing...things. apparently this city is infested with bats, but we haven't seen any yet. we did see a bum sleeping on the road! also a lot of car accidents. the food is really good here but no one seems to give a rip about local ingredients or whatever. it is kind of the anti-portland? i googled locavore restaurants and found only ( Read more... )

Rent a boat! If you do the paddle boats you can go under the bridge and hear them/ They usually fly around sunset from that bridge area.

There are a TONNNN of really gross bums here. I've seen them openly bleeding and puking and shitting in the streets. I think that AUstin is very much behind the Pacific NW in terms of social work and homelessness so they are more in your face.

Casa De Luz is vegan, macrobiotic and organic. It's good, but expensive and kind of touchy-feely!

if you go to wheatsville you can eat in the deli in the back (popcorn tofu!!!! or frito pie!!!) and they use a ton of local ingredients and even have little signs that tell you how many miles away from austin it is.

visit the harry ransom center (rare books library at UT) - it is truly wonderful!

that's so funny! I kind of thought of Austin as the Texas Portland. I really liked it there (but still like it here better, of course :) ). My best friend lives there. The bats are great! And the salsa!

i suppose it is in some ways -- indie culture and all that. but in foodie ways it is just not the same. also, horrendous traffic and truly awful drivers is anti-pdx! though in fairness, it's more the road design that s just awful beyond compare. the tex-mex is to die for, though :)
