Canada is currently in the process of deciding what to do about prostitution. Previously the only laws we had against it were about living off the proceeds and that was recently struck down by our supreme court as being unconstitutional ( Read more... )

I think it should be fully legalized and appropriately regulated. for example, sex workers should be just as entitled to compensation for injuries as other workers.

Me too. The way I see it, prostitution is going to happen regardless of whether society says it should or not, and I think it's better for everyone if it's regulated to protect sex workers and clients.

I have no problems with what a grown person does with their own body. I have huge issues when other people profit off of them since it could easily lead to exploitation. Human trafficking and exploitation is an issue that both the US and Canada needs to address. I can't imagine giving licenses to businesses that traditionally exploit women would help the situation.

Iawtc. In theory, I'm all for anything that protects women but I fear that making it legal might make it harder to prove human trafficking like in the Netherlands. Also, in Manitoba the average age a female enters prostitution is 12 or under. We really need to address this no matter what happens with the law.

If it's legalized, it would also be regulated. From what I have read, this would actually go a long way to stopping human trafficking because people could access prostitutes in a legal way. Prostitutes could work legally and safely as well, so might be more willing to enter the industry.
There are campaigns to legalize prostitution in my country (Australia) as a means of stopping human trafficking. Might be worth doing some more reading on that issue as it's one that I only know a bit about. I would think some good research has been done on the issue in countries where it's legalized.

Can't edit but another point. Manufacturing as an industry traditionally exploited people, men and women. That didn't stop until the industry became regulated, with mandated working conditions and minimum wages. I suspect the same is true of prostitution.

As someone who's prostituted to be able to pay bills before, I'm all or legalizing it.

as someone who is entirely too ugly to get a person to like him I'm all for legalizing it as well.

having said that I'm not sure it should be available in strip clubs and I'm wondering if that part of my question is somehow invisible

I think that there should be a different licensing process for brothels. So there could be businesses which have both strippers and prostitutes, but there would also be businesses which only have one of the two.

As long as there are regulations in place to ensure the safety of the workers, I'm all for it.

I've never seen the point of criminalizing prostitution in and of itself--criminalizing violent acts, coercion, abuse, etc that often comes when there aren't any regulations in place, yes, but not just the act of a consenting adult willingly having sex for money.

Plus, making it illegal makes it harder for sex workers to come forward when violent acts, coercion, and abuse take place.
