Help me out here, AMA. I'm thinking of entering a photography contest and I've narrowed it down to the following photos. There aren't really any limitations to the contest so I can enter any subject. It's $30 per photo, though, so I want to narrow it down to one or maaaaaaaybe two ( Read more... )

I like the girl in the rain too but the icey branches will most likely win in a contest.

Can't answer without knowing more about the contest. Local? Regional? Theme? Held by? Panel of judges from? Amateur or pro?

For Toronto. No theme, don't know about judges, amateur or pro. It's for a charity fundraiser. www.snap-toronto.com.

The middle two are the best ones (I don't know if I'd crop out the power lines, though -- they draw the eye, highlight the city, counter the vertical lamppost, add to the classic rule-of-thirdsy cleanness and provide a sharpened contrast to the mugginess of the shot). That seems the "safe" one, for better and for worse. Given that the contest is affiliated with ACT, maybe you'd get bonus points for having a prominent red element? Is the logo on the bag super distinctive? If so I'd consider the snake. Or if there's anything that's youth-affiliated or community-affiliated about any of the sponsors or judges, I'd consider the snake.

Sorry for such a political answer, haha

I think the girl with the umbrella is the most likely to have a chance.

I really like the icy branches, but they don't stand out quite enough - the ones in front get a little lost in the background. The skyline is too cliche.

I'd say #3 - the framing is unconventional (not dead-centre) and you're kind of wondering what the focal point should be - girl with red umbrella or the trees / skyline in the background?
