How long do you give a show that you no longer like before you stop watching it? If you've watched it for years, do you keep watching it to see the end game, even though you now hate it? Why or why not ( Read more... )

I still watch Supernatural, though I haven't enjoyed it near as much as I used to before season 6. It went downhill when Kripke was leaving, but it'd feel weird just to drop it. Besides I still have friends who watch it and would totally lay into me if I'd stop watching totally.

It reminds me of the people on youtube, bitching about music videos. Then why are you watching a band you don't like?!

I think a lot of people, especially online fans, get into a show and start to become a part of the fandom - or the community of fan who like the show. Even once the show starts going in a direction that they dislike, they still want to be a part of the fandom, and so they...er...endure shit that they don't like. I see this happen fairly often, especially with shows like Supernatural, Buffy, etc. - anything with a strong fanbase.

Yeah. If you're writing fanfiction, you get really invested in the characters and don't want to stop watching the show. I know that it frustrates me if I'm reading fanfiction and they contradict something that was stated in an episode. (Not talking about fanfiction where people deliberately rewrite stuff because they didn't like how it was done on the show.)

Yes. I went through that with LOST, but it was a little more than that. I was still invested in the story. Even though, I didn't like the direction of season 6, I was still interested in where the story was going. Once you're invested in the characters, you still want to hang in there.

Oh, fandoms... They're the reason why entertainment can't have nice things anymore.

I keep wondering about that myself. My guess is that some people just really want to have something to complain about, and popular tv shows is low hanging fruit. You can always find other people who hate the same things you do.

Depends on how emotionally invested I was in the show (mainly the characters, really) in the first place. I stayed on with Battlestar Galactica to the bitter end, even though it got lamer by the minute, because I was already in love with all of the characters. Dexter, on the other hand, I'm fixing to ditch because it's gone so far downhill and I can't muster up much give-a-damn about any of the characters anymore.
