Choosing classes

Dictate my life, AMA. After midnight I get to sign up for my classes for next semester. I'm an aspiring history teacher, but I also love reading comics. With that in mind, there are two classes that I'm interested in taking, but are at the same time on the same day:

Art of Comics
War of 1812

Art of Comics sounds like more fun, and I am allowed to take ( Read more... )

school, please dictate my life for me

You didn't tell us some important factors. How far along are you in your degree, and how often is each of these courses offered?

I suppose that is important! I am a Super Senior, set to graduate next fall. These classes are "special topics", meaning that they are offered whenever the instructors feel like offering them, which is inconsistently.

How well informed are you on the War of 1812? How much time did you spend on it in high school? I'd take the comics class, but I'm not you.

We were pretty much told that it happened, and then skipped straight to the Civil War, because we are Virginia and that is what Virginians care about. My admittedly little research on 1812 has shown that it is more important than the Revolutionary War was, in terms of making this country independent of outside influences like France or especially England, but I know little of the details. The star-spangled banner, the marine corps, the burning of DC -- all 1812. I've always been meaning to take time to study the war but I haven't gotten the chance to before.

I love comics and have always wished to know more about its history and the concepts behind its art, and I got really excited when I found out about the class, but now that there's this 1812 class I'm really hesitant. It would go nicely with my History of Animation class -- but I'm a future civics teacher. Sigh.

I would do the 1812 class but it really interests me whereas comics do not.

Me too. The War of 1812 is really an interesting, but often overlooked, part of American history.

This is the problem with being a history lover and a comic geek -- I'm interested in both! I'm probably about equal in my understanding of both of them though. I want to know more about them both! Why can't time-turners be real?

The War of 1812 prof has a 3.9 on ratemyprofessor.com, but the Comics prof isn't even on the site. Dang.

I'm a history major currently taking a War of 1812 course and it is the dullest course I've ever taken, it's such a boring subject. Take the comic one!

DO THE COMICS ONE! It's good to take classes not purely pertaining to your major, and you'll still have one more semester!
