I got to do a TEFL course, which I'd wanted to do for a while, got to spend time with my family, got to experience a few different jobs until I found my current one, and my current one, while it pays a little less than the job I was made redundant from, is much better, I have more time for myself, more opportunities for development, and it's way less physically and emotionally exhausting.
I saw the writing on the wall at a job back in 2006. My boss had been fired and the new boss had a serious attitude about the people left there. I was miserable working for him and started looking around. I had a job offer at a GREAT gig (am still there now!) and had a letter of resignation in my folder.
I had a 1:1 weekly meeting that he moved to first thing in the morning, and to a conference room on a floor full of conference rooms - empty at that time of the day. Odd. Walked in, and he and the HR person were in there. He smarmlily told me that my position was no longer needed, and after 2 or 3 sentences ducked out.
I pocketed my letter of resignation and took the severance package. :)
