What happens if a non-incumbant presidential candidate dies or becomes otherwise unable to be president right before the election?  Does their VP candidate automatically step up and become the candidate for POTUS?

TL;DR that party just picks a new person and the votes count for them instead.

That sounds fairly reasonable. In terms of policy, realistically you're actually voting for a team of advisers more than you're voting for an individual, right?

No actually what make me think of it was on my Yahoo there was a link to an article that said "Milt Campbell Dies" and when I first just grazed it I thought I read "Mitt ... Dies" and had to go back and read it. O_o

Then I started thinking, what would happen if he had really died at this point?

now all i want to do is watch the west wing election where the vp candidate dies like halfway through election night.
