Ama, I need an idiot proof sugar cookie recipe where I can use whole wheat flower and splenda. Any tried and true recipes? I've googled but this is more fun. I want to use cookie cutters to make cats and ghosts.

I have never in my life tried to make sugar cookies with whole wheat flour. That's almost sac-religious. No, it is. Maybe an oatmeal cookie, but not sugar.

This. And if I had, I doubt it would be idiot proof, since the kind of flour you use really affects the final product. =/

This. It wouldn't be anywhere near sugar-cookie texture or flavour.

I've used this recipe for years with many variations, including whole wheat flour & Splenda (although the white-wheat flour works better than the brown whole wheat). They have a shortbread consistency, no matter what kind of flour you use.

2 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla

Whisk together flour and salt. Cream butter and sugar until light. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Add flour mixture and mix till combined. Put dough on wax paper or plastic wrap and shpe into a disk. Chill for 1 hour (can be frozen & thawed out before baking).

To bake:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Roll out dough to 1/4" thickness and cut with cookie cutters. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown on bottom.
