there's a reason we don't talk about these things

There is an actor that I “liked” on Facebook. I’ve been a fan of his work for many years. He posts the usual things - upcoming projects, answers questions about different roles, etc. - but he also posts his opinions about various news items ( Read more... )

Nope. I'm a fan of several people whose views are/were contrary to mine (I say were because some of them are dead), and in fact I like learning about and considering how the other side feels in any given debate, even though I may not always agree with them.

So, my question is - does an artists’ political/religious beliefs have any effect on your desire to enjoy their work?
Not yet. So far the only thing that effects my desire to enjoy their work is the quality of their work.

Would you suddenly stop watching your favorite TV show if you found out the star was on the exact opposite scale of world views than you?
It really depends on what the view is that we're talking about here. I mean, if I found out that Jim Parsons was murdering kittens for the thrill of it, then yeah, I'd probably stop watching The Big Bang Theory. I'd miss the fuck out of it, but I'd stop.

Not in the least. It's their acting or art that I enjoy, and if I enjoyed it before I knew their political views, then I can sure as hell continue enjoying it afterwards.

sometimes, i think less of adam baldwin after seeing his ridiculous conspiracy theory-esque tweets, that's for sure.
and i won't watch mel gibson movies, but mostly because i don't enjoy his movies. he's also a shitty person. so is charlie sheen, i'll avoid his stuff if i can.

This. I stil enjoy 30 Rock even though I disagree whole-heartedly with Tracey Morgan and Alec Baldwin, but Mel Gibson movies with the exception of maybe a handful, I can take or leave, and I just think he's a really messed-up individual, same with Charlie Sheen.

Tom Cruise is also a messed-up individual, but I do enjoy his acting in certain movies, so I will spend money if the movie is intriguing enough. Although if I found out Sarah Michelle Gellar sacrifices kittens for funsies, I'd still think Buffy was the best show ever.

I'm a fan of several people who have views that aren't like mine, and in two cases I can think of, I still am a fan of actors who were fairly unpleasant to me/my friends at cons (in line, with normal interactions that shouldn't have provoked unfavorable reactions). The worst for me seems to be Orson Scott Card. I still love Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow but I can't make myself forget that his views are reeeeeally opposite of mine and he's said some stuff that's not ok.

I live close to Greensboro, NC and am friends with a lot of people who live in there and he has a column, Uncle Orson Speaks, in the local paper. My friends who went to school in Greensboro all go "AUGHUGH" every time you say his name.
