Why are there races with hurdles? Don't you think the hurdlers probably think "This would be a whole damn lot easier without the hurdles."?

Srs and non srs answers welcome

missing the point, attempts at humour

Historically these races were for messengers, a competition to find the best of the best. It was a mark of pride among the profession to win these competitions. Like baking contests, or plowing competitions. (hurdles representing fallen logs and dead messengers who couldn't outrun the people they were spying on)

/end bullshit answer that maybe makes sense.

I can sort of see this one. I don't really understand the ski then shoot thing (although I get this came about because of hunting ability).

Because it has a historical context. Not only that, but the whole point of track and field is to test athletic ability. Sure it would be easier to just run, or walk, or to just stand still really. But that is not what athletic ability is about. They want to determine who is the best at all sorts of ridiculous things.

It is also easier to throw a frisbee rather than a shot put, but people still throw shot puts.

I would like to see a sport where one person throws a Frisbee, and another has to shoot it down with a shot put.

That's an Olympic event I'd watch!
