I've always thought that after the rumors first started, the Beatles (or their manager or PR guy) intentionally planted "clues" because they thought it was amusing and good publicity.

There's a "documentary" about this. I really tried, I watched a good 45 minutes before I couldn't take how ridiculous the claims and "coincidences" were anymore.
