In the city I live in, every year before Christmas, lower elementary school children from the entire city make gingerbread houses and decorate them. These houses are displayed in a tent in the city center. This year they were destroyed by unknown vandals not 24 hours after they were put up for display. A police chief inspector has been quoted in one of the country's biggest newspapers with this (remember that no one knows who destroyed the candy houses, and they have no clues either):
"This is done by angry teenagers, almost certainly boys; no girl(s) would ever do something like this. [...] It's done for attention. They aren't capable of getting positive attention, but by doing this they are able to get negative attention. These people are losers and they are neither good at school, at sports, nor socially. [...] They have to be almost retarded"
What would happen in your country if a police officer said this to the media? What's your reaction when you read this? Do you think he's out of line?
Edit: Personally I don't think the guy is going to get in any real trouble for what he said. In the article he wasn't the focus at all, just an ending paragraph introduced with "Police chief inspector Karsten Raa was a lot less guarded than his colleague when commenting on the incident"
