I'm just curious as to what you think makes Katniss a Mary Sue. I personally don't like her character a lot, especially in the books, but I definitely do not see her as unflawed or perfect. I have a lot of issues with the way she judges people - specifically people with mental diseases (her mom's depression/Haymitch's alcoholism), and I never thought that was meant to be seen as a good thing. Maybe we have a different view of what a Mary Sue is supposed to be? In any case maybe it's me personally disliking that term. /o\

I definitely don't mean perfection. Mary Sue is sort of a catch-all term for me when there's a female (of course Gary Stu for male, although MS def gets used more in fandom discussion than MS - who ever called Harry Potter a Gary Stu?) main character whose flaws, if they exist, readers are supposed to see positively, or to ignore because they ~contribute to her characterization and thus aren't actual flaws. Since I didn't talk about the books much when I read them, I didn't elaborate on the things I didn't like then, and my opinion of the movie is sort of an extension of that. I think that reading the books as adults we DO see Katniss's flaws, but that they get sort of glossed over both in the book and in the movie. I felt like the movie flashbacks to her father's death and interactions with her mom were really aimed at showing Katniss in a positive light, making the audience sympathize even more with her, rather than pointing out her issues with mental problems or inability to empathize with any weakness. And the thing that REALLY ( ... )

I just don't understand the term Mary Sue as it is thrown around in fandom IN GENERAL. I kind of hate it for a lot of reasons because every time there is a female character people don't like the reason is OH SHE'S JUST SUCH A MARY SUE.

Mary Sue is sort of a catch-all term for me when there's a female main character whose flaws, if they exist, readers are supposed to see positively, or to ignore because they ~contribute to her characterization and thus aren't actual flaws. But ...isn't that every character ever? If you like a character isn't your instinct to be like 'well, yeah, that person has flaws but I love him/her anyway.' I don't see anything about the way Katniss treats people as a good thing. I don't even think it was PORTRAYED that way. I think you're supposed to think there's something wrong with it but still see the justification for it (she was a CHILD who's dad died and wasn't able to grieve because her mother fell into a depression - while I think it's abhorrent that she has that superiority, I would see a problem ( ... )

You're welcome to your opinions. And it's cool to talk about them here. A summary of Voltaire's beliefs said it best, right? I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.I think that often an author's point is make you sympathize with the main character, but... that's not usually what I'm looking for? IDK, I think this is one of the reasons that I don't read much fiction outside of fanfiction any more ( ... )

I wasn't ever really into NSYNC or other boy-bands, so One Direction are not really pinging my radar, but to each his/her own, right? Especially now, while MCR & other bandom bands are relatively quiet.

SO EXCITED. MOAR BILLIE JOE & MIKE & TRE!
