its made for japanese people, so if you "don't really know kanji well at all," then it might be over your head and not much of use.
its not for learning kanji anymore than a dictionary is for learning vocabulary.
ive played a little with it, but a lot of the quizzes seem to be aimed at a fairly high level of language usage. i think it would be more of use to you after you get to your 3rd year of japanese. kanji arent learned in a few semesters, so give yourself time and keep working at it.
I have the original version before they introduced the Kanji writing aspect of it. It is a decent buy, and I'd recommend it, especially for thise who can't afford a denshijisho right away. There's lots of functions on it, even a "memory" fuction that you can store certain words you've looked up. My only complaints are that it didn't always include the furigana (but again, this was before the introduction of the kanji writing) and some words i could never find (that may have been updated as well). Over all well worth the $50 i paid at the time.
Hmm... I donno if the first one had it, but somebody said in the review of this one that you can 'draw' in the hiragana to find the kanji, so maybe they did upgrade the kana, too. If it had the kana in it, I would probably be okay... =^_^=
The one i have has the kana writing feature. but was somewhat useless when it came to Kanji that had no furigana and I was not familair with. (>_<)I'm sure the updated one would be easier to use as it has the kanji writing. keep in mind though, that it may still be tricky to look them up. I have a brand new Denshijisho that won't give me the furigana half the time when i write a kanji in it.
Do you agree with the other person who posted that you have to be pretty advanced in kanji already to have much use? I guess I'm not the most advanced...just beginner, but I do know kana, so figured that'd help.
Since it's built for Japanese-native speakers, it would be best if you were more advanced, but I would also say the need of a kanji dictionary in general means you plan to get there anyway, so it's a good thing to invest in. It'll kind of be like taking a dive into deeper waters~ XD Plus, with the awesome touchpad writing feature, you should be able to get pretty far on it without any major problems :3
I suggest buying a quality digital dictionary with the feature where one can write the characters instead of searching by radicals. You can get ones with Jap-Eng, Chi-Eng and a complete kanji dictionary, and maybe even an encyclopedia. It pays for itself in the amount of time you save not having to go through endless pages of dictionaries.
This game is probably fun to play around with but it'll probably be geared for Japanese people who need to brush up on their characters. They'll hopefully know all the joyo kanji so it probably tests all the rare characters, kotowaza and placenames. The Japanese really went bizzare with some of their kanji for placenames.
