Nobody, who is a fan of this show, of Buffy, of strong women can see her going back to Spike, having a relationship with him after he tried to rape her. That for me goes against everything this show taught us about being strong, about being a Slayer, and hell about being female in a male dominated world.
I also think it goes against everything Buffy is as a person.
I can appreciate Spike getting his soul for her. I can appreciate Buffy forgiving him, not only for herself, but also for him. We have seen over the course of the series that Buffy is a compassionate person, and takes it upon herself to help others. I truly think she would try and forgive him for that.
BUT. I do not think she would forget. I do not see her trusting him ever again
See I can understand that as well. As a vampire Spike and Angelus have done terrible things. I can see that. But that is the difference between having a soul or not. You know Angel would never do that. You know spike with his soul would never do that.
I can see past the abusive consensual sex for the sake of Buffy's emotional issues at this point. I don't like it. I don't think it works in any relationship, but I get it, and I get why.
My issue is that after having someone attempt rape, would you take them back, no you wouldn't even if you know they wouldn't do it again there is still no way you could forget. So having Buffy actually want to be in a relationship with him after seeing red is OOC in my opinion.
I think that without the rape scene I would have had a very different opinion on this couple but with it in very 'no' mindset.
I wasn't a shipper per se but canon Buffy/Spike really worked for me. I was not fond of the fanon version because I don't like whitewashed woobie Spike. But I can buy their relationship in the completely messed-up, mutually abusive, codependent way it was portrayed on the screen. I mean, if these two were anything resembling normal people I would agree with you on this: "thinking that a relationship starting (and ending) in the emotional and physical abuse of the other can end in anything but heartbreak and anger". But they're special cases, each with their own bit of demon, and I felt they were - in a fucked up way - actually good for each other.

And the way I interpreted canon, by the end of the series she was in the process of making her peace with that part of herself, whereas all the years before she tried to be just a normal girl, which was doomed to fail and making her all the more miserable

I actually don't know if this would've happened to Delena as well..my heart would probably shatter. But rape was never showed, he just killed a bunch of people LOL All due to humanity switch (kinda like no soul in BTVS)

If that scene had been with Angelus instead of Spike there would be no way I would be shipping Buffy/Angel, but it wasn't it was with Spike.
So I guess maybe seeing the action rather then just knowing about it adds to the horror? Hammers it home.

And yes, I think that 'acting on them' is what is the difference between the soul and not, and the actual thought behind it.
