Heh. Mom was quite a character. She was extremely intelligent, and self-educated. (She had to repeat a year of high school, and never attended college, but she read voraciously and was always well-informed of the events of the day.) She must have gone to great pains to lose her down-home twang, and was very proud of her command of standard pronunciation and grammar. But I think she retained an affection for her native land.
Your mom sounds like a trip. I bet I'd like her. I love accents from anywhere. I hate when people try to sound "American" or from whatever region. I think accents give people character, just like their traditions and customs do. I hate the "homogenization" of America. The worst thing, ever, if you ask me.
