You are right about misinterpretations being rife on Twitter. I mean you can get misunderstood anywhere but it's a lot easier to trip over a dropped ball when you've only got 140 characters to say what you mean.
And there's no edit function either!

The lack of edit function is frustrating on Tiwtter. I'm surprised they haven't changed that yet (though some typos are pretty funny...)

Ditto on the conversational tone of lj. It beats every other social media site hands down for me, but I wonder sometimes if that's because it was (almost) my first social media site and I just can't seem to keep away?

LJ used to be my go to place - but I find myself checking Twitter more regularly than LJ these days. LJ will always have a place in my heart though...:D
I entered fandom after the yahoo group days - I heard about them though! I actually heard of people coming over to LJ because the message boards were so horrible...
I love that LJ seems much more friendly (less wank etc) than many of the other places.
