[After a long morning of wandering the gray city, slipping from district to district, god-house to god-house to get an idea of the kind of place this really is - and nothing to indicate that there will be any sudden return trips to No.6, Nezumi settles onto a shadowed bench and pulls his cloak low enough to obscure his features further ( Read more... )

I'd be surprised if anyone really thought these imposters were being straight with us about this place.

There is very little that would surprise me - and every world has it's suckers. The pampered and gullible or easily swayed by a seemingly sincere plea of sincerity.

[A beat.]

Every world has it's fools and it's foolish. I'm just curious to see how many made it here.

Enough to make a livin' off it all, that's for sure.

... and even more that will profit off of them, no doubt.

[A beat, then a low laugh.]

Which will you be, I wonder?

They said they wanted life and color, but never what sort.....and those who complain sure make themselves noticed. They change things too. Perhaps that was all part of those God's plan.

Perhaps.

Or perhaps we're just rats in a cage, here to play to another's tune until they either get what they really want or have no further need for us. Do you trust their purpose as it was stated to you?

Who can tell for sure now? We will have to wait and see.

No, not competently. They are not my gods, I was made by a different one and I shall return to her.

Seems that's the way of it here. [He laughs then, the sound melodic and bright, yet chilled all the same.]

Guess the stage is set. I wonder how long it'll take the actors to learn their lines... or your supposed goddess to re-claim her precious lamb.

[ The manner in which Nezumi speaks reminds Jr. vividly of his brother; therefore, it's with no small amount of trepidation that he responds. ]

Not everyone here comes from backgrounds where they're going to think of biting the hands that feeds them. Or, ya know, the hand that has the power to yank them across dimensions into this one.

[ But silently, Jr. can't help but agree with Nezumi. ]

If that's your theory, wouldn't you expect them to start with you first?

Quite possibly, but then most animals will bit the hand that draws near, if they feel threatened enough.

[He sounds more amused by the thought than anything, because he's unlikely to actually stir up any notable trouble. To do so would imply caring for the welfare of others here and really... that simply isn't the case.

His only purpose is finding a way back, to fulfill his goal.]

It'll be interesting, though, to see how long ideals hold up to this caged reality.

Most humans are a bit brighter than the common animal, though.

[ Man, there really is something about this kid that is reminiscent of Albedo. ]

Let's hope we get the hell out of here before that becomes the case. The last thing we need is mass panic.

That just means their bite is a little harder, doesn't it? Or maybe... designed to hurt more~?

[Still more amused than anything as he chuckles softly and waves an elegant hand as if to wave it away.]

Ah, but wouldn't that be a sight to see? I wonder just how long these grande ideals would last in the face of mass insanity...

Did you seriously just say 'dens of iniquity'....?

I don't believe I stuttered.

That's some pretty aggressive vocabulary. Are you supposed to be an itinerant preacher or something?

[Bright, melodious laughter meets that question, tinged with something almost... cruel.]

Gods don't exist for rats, unless they're self-styilized gods. Forgive me for having fully developed linguistic capabilities.

I have yet to see activity classifying these houses as dens of iniquity.

[Just saying. He's been to a den of iniquity, man. These people have way more clothes on. For the most part.]

And it would be foolish to trust these gods, or that their requests are anything other than demands.

The term 'den of iniquity' originated from the biblical term 'den of thieves'. The meaning's changed as history progressed, but if you take the literal meaning... it means taking something supposedly sacred - like oh, say, a Holy City and tainting it with vice.

[He laughs at that, rich and amused.]

Take it a step further and old history shows that gods like these usually represent a divine aspect of what humanity thought they were and you'll see what traits each of these gods represent. Given enough time, each house will develop a vice of their own based on that supposed humanity - of that I have no doubt.

[...The one time he uses a modern version of a term instead of a biblical, he's chosen wrong. This is Castiel's life. He's just gonna pretend that never happened, and move on.]

Provided that you are in a world in which human belief created the gods, rather than that the gods inspired beliefs. If these gods are of the latter time, then they are simply individuals as any other, and though they will indeed have their own vices they may have little to do with legend.

I'd be inclined to believe the latter over the former, in this case. As it seems that, here, a god is a useless thing unless it has the properly submissive masses their to bolster their desires, or else this grayscale place wouldn't exist.

Interesting, isn't it? That a so-called 'god' can reach into all these worlds, but they can't create life. Only the shadow of it.
