At Arisia (a recent Boston convention) I went to a concert by Heather Dale, a Celtic singer from Canada I just discovered. Apparently she known around Canada but not so much down in the States. Very rarely does the New Yorker write reviews of Science Fiction. I waited in vain for Serenity to do so well that they would review it in their Critic's Page. They did review Star Wars Episode III, but they panned it in a scathing review. (not that it didn't deserve the criticism) The New Yorker tends to review artsy or intellectual movies. John Spenser, the actor who played "Leo McGarry" on The West Wing has just died of a heart attack at 58. The West Wing is in the middle of season 7 and Leo was the running mate to Jimmy Smit's presidential candidate. The ironic thing is that the character Leo McGarry just had a heart attack last season. I just finished reading "Conventions of War", the last in the Dread Empire's Fall trilogy by Walter John Williams. It's a grand space opera with big battles, nasty enemies, pathos and heartbreak. I just watched the Farscape season 2 episode "Won't Get Fooled Again" and am still laughing to myself. It's just that good. Having never bought the original overpriced DVDs, I'm really enjoying the new Starburst DVDs. They're pretty cheap and have some great features. I just saw Mirrormask tonight. It's only out in limited release but it is a very beautiful movie. The movie was made by the Jim Hensen company for only $4 million, which is amazing considering how good it looks. The plot is a cross between Labyrinth and Alice in Wonderland.
