People go to conventions for many different reasons. And there are many types of science fiction conventions, so it's hard to stereotype. I enjoy going to panels and discovering new authors, discussing my favorite books and movies and learning about new topics. I enjoy attending filk concerts and viewing the amazing artwork at the art show. I enjoy window shopping at the huckster's room and getting into conversations with other fans hanging out at the consuite. I enjoy the evening award shows and parties

I know there are perks, but I just can't get over the concept of cramming oneself into a convention center with a bunch of strangers. Plus, I rarely buy anything mainstream enough to be available at a con.

They aren't strangers once you meet a few of them. The whole point of a convention is you meet people who start out as strangers and end up as friends. Or bring a friend along with you to the con, so you're not alone. As for stuff, I almost never buy anything at conventions.

I am always mystified by the way geeks can enjoy going to conventions, just as I am by the way jocks can enjoy going to parties.
