1.) The big blogosphere news of the last 48 hours is Cooks Source editor's plagiarism and rudeness when asked to acknowledge her unethical action. Unfortunately for Ms. Griggs, the original poster has a social media connection, and basically her bad behavior brought the internet dogpile on her ( Read more... )

In re: Honor/Talia

That is an interesting list of comparisons. However Talia=short and Honor=tall. Therefore your analysis is irrelevant. :-P

...also Talia doesn't haven't a gun in the middle finger of her artificial hand, so the whole thing falls apart.

No, she just strikes people down with the power of her mind. And sometimes her feelings.

I'm not sure I recall Talia's empathy ever being projective...but in any case it's not cybernetic, so it's hardly the same.

On the other hand, Nimitz rides on Honor's shoulder while Talia rides on Rolan's shoulder (so to speak), so you may have something there. :-)

Reread the second book in the Talia trilogy: she's projecting during the blizzard in Sorrows.

These are minor points compared to the overwhelming similarities. First they put others before themselves, suffering mightily in silence, derail multiple plots against Queen and country, and are feted by Kingdom (or Empire) as enemies loom in the background. Yes?

Ha! My first reaction was, "But Honor has a sentient cat! ...oh wait."

Also, I like Dirk way, way more than Alexander Hamish, although this may have something to do with a) reading the Talia books as a kid, and b) rolling my eyes really, really hard at the love triangle, which is really when i stopped reading the Honor books.

Ha! My first reaction was, "But Honor has a sentient cat! ...oh wait."

The alpha version was speculation that, if Honor was a Lackey character, she'd be one of the post-Solaris priestess. Obviously, Nimitz = firecat. But back-crossing Talia into the Honorverse suggested a better idea.

The Honor-Hamish-Emily love triangle is torrid in the least entertaining ways. I wish Weber liked his protagonists a bit less and had let it explode in their faces. Or that he trusted his audience a bit more and let the OT3 happen without the stupid "well, she's 95% disabled, so sex with other people is all right" wavering.

Also? Dirk >>> Hamish. When his requited-but-it's-complicated love interest was captured by deadly enemies, he repatriated her with the power of his mind (Heraldic Gifts, whatever). Among other excellent qualities.

Yeah. Dirk is actually cool.

I totally agree -- OT3 would have been just fine. As would have been an explosion. But the way he did it is just... stupid. (And seems a bit, I dunno, insensitive as well.)
