Air (Geoff Ryman): Absolutely worth reading. Do you know why this got a Tiptree? Because it's a story about a woman in a fake -stan. The copyright concerns are where his permission comes into play. Since I set his poem directly to my music, as soon as money might change hands (such as recording on a cassette or a CD or a download offered for sale) then various permissions are required. If he didn't care, he could sign me permission, and receive (miniscule) royalties as the writer of the words of that track of the album. If he withholds his permission, I can't put it on my album. On the other hand, I can perform it at filkcircles, since that's not considered a paying situation. Youtube and other internet posting are a whole 'nother kettle of fish that I'd be asking my friends about the legalities and niceties about.

Now, if I had filked his book, writing my own words to my own music about his story, I wouldn't need his permission to publish or sell that.
