Scott Pilgrim vol. 4: Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together (Bryan Lee O'Malley): It took almost exactly one commute to read this. It's hard to tell if I disliked this less because of circumstances (commuting to PT job on bus) or because SP's storyline is "how to suck a little less at being a grown-up person."

Truer words were never spoken lightning58 August 18 2010, 11:01:45 UTC
"What's colorful in fiction becomes stressful and sometimes horrifying in real life."

It's like the line in this Iraq military memoir I've just started:

"What we didn't know, even though all the old soldier stories say it clear as day, is that we would always be there, even long after we left."

Matt Gallagher (Kaboom: Embracing the Suck in a Savage Little War).

"What we didn't know, even though all the old soldier stories say it clear as day, is that we would always be there, even long after we left."

In terms of the impact on Iraq, and servicemen and servicewomen carrying their experiences back home with them, both true.

Have you ever tried Bill Willingham's Fables series? I've read the first 4, & they're all excellent. Look for allusions in background details, like the names of shops, etc.

I haven't read Fables; I'm not particularly drawn to fairy tale retellings without something else going on. People say they're good, though.
