The best cookie sheet I've ever owned was free, made by my grandfather from scrap stainless steel when he worked at a steel mill. Actually he made two, but Mom gave me one when I got married and let my sisters argue about who got the other one.

And it'll be in the mail tomorrow for my side-by-side evaluation, yes? Carpentry I can finagle, scrap metal not so much.

Whwn you can, get a Panasonic rice cooker. It's worth the extra money. We got 17 years out of the one we got as a wedding present; it still works, but we wanted a bigger one with more features, like a brown rice setting. The old one is being saved for Lydia's eventual departure.

The rice cooker's on the to-do list. So far oven-top rice has served well enough.

Have you checked really cheap thrift shops (e.g. church-run)/Goodwill? There's a thrift shop down the street from me that sells Pyrex for like $3 a piece, and I don't have to pay for shipping, and I get to examine sizes etc.

Not yet! I'm in the preliminary "Cook's Illustrated Kitchen Basics equipment reviews? Uh-oh" part of making the shopping list.

Put Roommate#3 in charge of the rice cooker. Zojirushi (of the same make as the hot water god) makes a great "fuzzy logic" ricecooker.

There's really solid rice cookers on the market, but everyone's too broke to even consider investigating at the moment.
