Hopefully It's All Spelled Right... (May Reading)

Jun 02, 2005 16:35

The worst part about these long entries is spellchecking them. Apparently I am incapable of implementing the "i before e" rule with any sort of consistency. And in my defense, I finished four of these after finals. I still need to get out more. To save people's friends pages, I'm cutting for length. No spoilers under the cut unless noted.

I like Horseriver, too. Nice to find a villain whose selfishness involves destroying something other than the future.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite, still. I should reread Paladin.

Paladin and Chalion are nice, but... they're very nice books. This is not particularly a compliment. Even the villains aren't exactly villains, they're more victims of circumstances. HH doesn't particularly have that problem, IMO.

I'm just starting my first reread of HH, and I'm enjoying it so far. It's a book that really doesn't everything out for you from the start.

Some people onlist are saying that it just totally changes track partway through the book and that was bad. But for me I just had no clue where it was going until it got there. And enjoyed that!! :-)

I found Hallana a bit annoying at first, but better later too. I loved Oswin as well. I wish we saw more of him!!

I agree with you on Earl Horseriver, I felt bad for him too at some points -- definitely a great villian! :-)

Ditto. The reader doesn't get all the pieces, unless they can make the logical jump that Horseriver gets something when the old hallow king dies (and I certainly didn't make that jump) until pretty late in the book.

I don't know if I felt bad for him, but you can sort of see where he's coming from. Empathy without sympaphy?

Ah, actually, I'm much further along now, and yes, I do feel bad for Horseriver. Not that I like him or approve of his actions. But I do feel bad for the poor guy(s). :-)

I'm really enjoying the book a lot this time. The first read had too much for me to absorb all at once. I'm at the very last bit now and savoring it. :-D

I'm callin Jokol's islands as the setting for the next book. Since I presume this is going to be a Quintology when it grows up, and islands with ice bears would be the ideal setting for the Father's book.

The current rumor is that the next thing is another fantasty be set in a new universe, but if LMB decides to write the Father's book eventually, I think you might be right. If the southern islands are as Norse-analog as they sound, they would be an appropriate setting for a novel about a god of justice.
