10.

beck - modern guilt
// modern guilt

this was the first whole Beck album I've ever actually heard and it took me a little while to get used to the sound, but i think it's really cool.

o9.

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
// time to pretend

apparently this band is really polaring? like, either you really like them or really hate them? idk, but if "elecctric feel" doesn't make you want to dance, i don't know what to do with you.

o8.

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
a-punk // m79

this was an awesome summertime album. makes you want to dance around like crazy.

o7.

Sara Bareilles - Little Voice*
many the miles // gravity

awesomeness. mostly poppy but intensely beautiful and sad with tracks like "gravity". *i know this album was actually released in 2007, but i heard it in 2008, so i say it counts.

o6.

Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs
// no sunlight

i may possibly like this album more than plans or any of their others simply because there's more variety throughout the tracks. they experiemented with different instuments and sounds and did some different things for them and i think it paid off.

o5.

Panic at the Disco - Pretty. Odd.
northern downpour // folkin' around

these boys. i am so proud of them for making this album. because A Fever You Can't Sweat Out all sounded the same; there wasn't a stand-out track and it all blurred together iin a sort of rougher, sharper Fall Out Boy sound (whic is understandable). But this album, they are soft and powerful and so, so beautifully lyrical. They are indie and rock and even country. it's a much more adult sound than before. i'm so pround of them for this album; they grew into themselves.

o4.

Blind Pilot - 3 Rounds and a Sound
paint or pollen // two towns from me

mellow, beautiful guitar music. music to lay in the grass and stare at the sky in peace or to sit at the window and watch the rain. muchos credit to captaincatapult for the original reccomendation. also, they are from Portland, OR, so hometown pride!

o3.

The Hush Sound - Goodbye Blues
the boys are too refined // hurricane

these guys. so good, but so hard to describe. let's start with thier label, Fuled By Ramen (you know, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Cobra Starship, PatD and Gym Class Heroes, among others). only they don't really sound like any of those bands. i would venture to say it's a little more indie and less rock than bands like PatD. there's male and female vocalists, there's drums and piano and guitar. it's pretty much just awesome. they also did a song about Barack Obama, if you need another reason to love them.

o2.

A Fine Frenzy - One Cell In The Sea*
//

*another "release in 2007, but heard it in 2008" album. she has an incredible gift for creating stories out of her songs, that are solid enough to be formed but fluid enough that each person can have thier own version. just, beautiful and dynamic.

o1.

Coldplay - Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
viva la vida // lost!

no contest. i was not really a fan of coldplay before this album. not that i disliked them, but i'd never been interested enough in them to get a hold of a whole of one of their albums. but this thing. it's freaking fantastic. the singles are beautiful; the entire album is wonderful on shuffle, but especially amazing when played in order. it's all tied together and is just plain wonderful and perfect. if this album doesn't win the Grammy for Album of the Year, I will have lost faith in the music business entirely.
