I first experienced Skyline Drive when our family was on vacation during my early teens. I believe it was the bicentennial of the Civil War (1964 or 5) and we had all these coupons that would get us reduced rates at a number of historical sites. At the time, my mother had been the Franklin County (Maine) chairwoman for then Senator Margaret Chase Smith so one of the high lights of our trip was staying at her Silver Springs home, but I digress. Eventually we found ourselves on that beautiful highway. Later, when I was crossing the country by bike, my route took me through Front Royal, I think, though perhaps a map would illustrate it better:
