Trying to explain to a Brit why Beckham is NOT the greatest footballer in the world, is like trying to explain to a stubborn four-year-old that Santa Claus doesn't exist.

He's, like, the third or fourth best on his own team. The team that frequently doesn't let him play when he's healthy. How can he be best in the world?

That...that is insane. O_o
I bet one* could make the case that Beckham isn't even the best that England has ever produced.

*I would not be the person to do this, as I don't have nearly enough knowledge to pull this off.

Maybe once upon a time (but really, no, not even that ); and probably once upon a time best penalty kicker, but that's about it.

Nowadays, as mentioned, barely even a starter on his national team. WTF?

No, he's not. captainwhimsy June 22 2010, 20:52:39 UTC
He's not the greatest footballer in the world. At all. Many more were better before him. He's just the most publicised.

I agree, and the whole shitstorm started when I said he was overrated. I didn't even say he wasn't good, I just said he's not as good as the hype! Every time someone says "the British Pele" I just want to punch an Englishman (present company excluded).
