On 20/20 tonight (10 Eastern, 9 Central) on ABC, there is a show about the Hidden America: Appalachian children. I hope some of you on my list can watch it, as it takes place in my neck of the woods and will show you what it's like here.

We ended up not getting to watch it immediately, but recorded it. What did you think of it?

yeah, i lnew about the poverty, too, but it's so heartbreaking. it was the same where we lived in western NY; people living in trailers made out of old billboards, shacks with no windows, and even worse on the indian reservation. i think we need so much more help for the people addicted to drugs, and more intervention in terms of drug awareness, as there seems to be multigenerational ignorance. why is incest such a problem in the poorest places? is it because of the combination of factors such as illiteracy/ignorance, poverty with little hope of ever having any opportunity, and the related sense of despondence?
k, do adie and sasha have it that bad? that's what i kept thinking about...

Adie and Sasha have it pretty bad. They live in an old beaten down single wide trailer that was from the early seventies, and the area they live in is poverty stricken, just off of a main road that is much better off.

I don't really understand the incest being such a great problem either, except they see their wives and children as property. That truly still goes on, even among my friends. The man rules, and he is king.

I watched it. kattraks February 14 2009, 05:07:03 UTC
I've been up in Kentucky and seen it. Arkansas used to be just like that and most of southern Alabama and NW Florida where I live is a lot like it too. We are the poorest county in the state of Florida and have severe drug issues, poverty, incest and hopelessness.

I hope the President and all the big-wigs receiving big bonuses watched and were convicted to do something for the less fortunate among us.

I hope so too. President Obama has been here, at least about an hour away from here. He came to Lebanon, VA and it is one of the nicer areas around here. Still, I hope he really sees... hope he watched the program, but rather doubt it, with all he has to do!

It always frustrates me that I can't watch stuff that's recommended to me.
During the summer we usually watch 20/20. Maybe they'll have a repeat.

Maybe it will... I hope so, Donna. We're going to watch it later this weekend.

I LOVE your icon! Happy Valentine's Day!

By the time I read your post that day it was already after 11 pm Eastern time and so the show was over. Sometimes I regret that I watch TV so seldom. This is one of those times. If I had been in the habit I would certainly have looked at it, because I am interested in American folkways and Applachia is included in my interest. Maybe they will rerun it sometime. Maybe on PBS?
