London

So, for quite a long time I've had this totally crazy idea of working in the UK for a year or two. I've decided that this is the year I'm finally going to get my lazy arse over there and do it. Mostly because I have enough work experience in this field now that I feel like I could qualify for a position without too much hassle. My process for ( Read more... )

I don't actually live in the UK, but I spent the past semester in Norwich, and I visited London enough to have some idea on a couple of those questions. You can get a free/cheap tour of the main sights in London with Sandeman's New London Tours, which probably wouldn't compare to a tour by someone you actually know but would make a good start. And in my experience, it takes kind of forever to get anywhere on the Underground, which seemed to be true no matter what time of day it was. Definitely wouldn't be able to fight a bike on there during rush hour, if nothing else, and most tube stations don't have lifts, so it might be a little challenging to take your bike around everywhere.

I can't say I can comment on London at all, but I used to work in cellular so I can give you a bit of iPhone info.

The iPhone 3G is quad-band, with all 3 bands of 3G as well, so it will be able to talk to their towers. Unlocked is good. The trouble you may have is that the phone will need a few settings before internet will work, though you should be able to get those settings from the provider.

Hope that helps! Good luck on moving to the Northern hemisphere!

I should refer you to my (potential) cousin-in-law over there... he's in art as well =D but I don't know how overwhelmingly busy he is...

London, last time I checked wasn't too bike un-friendly... though you might want to avoid using the bike anytime near rush hour and invest in a lightweight collapsible thing as many train stations have loads of stairs and no lifts...
As for the iPhone with Google Maps, I can't see why Google Maps won't work. I don't know for sure whether an Australian iPhone will or won't work in the UK, but I can't imagine there being too much of a problem.
I'd offer you a tour of London, but I live in Bournemouth (which is 150-ish miles south).

I live in the UK, but unfortunately, nowhere near London X3

I reckon a UK sim card would work in an AU iphone, because I don't think the iphone is much different in different countries - especially english-speaking ones.

But otherwise, I don't think I'm much help - I've never been to London, and live too far away from it to really give any advice on how best to get round it.
