Food for two is twice too much

Jul 27, 2007 23:42

This morning I made hash browns and forgot that I am cooking for one this week. In fact twice today, I made exactly enough for two. I made an entire skillet of hash browns, which is entirely too much for one person. Later, I made a smoothie but again out of habit made enough for two, which meant that I had a smoothie that was so big I had to eat it ( Read more... )

i love ursula leguin! my favorite is probably the disposessed. it has similar themes but is set in the utopian/distopian future in the pacific northwest.

also, i should mention that we talked about the announcements, and while we really appreciate your offer, due to technology being what it is pretty much everyone who is interested not only knew about river but had seen pictures of him within a couple of days, so sending announcements after that seemed kind of anticlimactic. but thanks anyway!

What part is in the PacNW? Is it when he comes to the other planet? I guess I read too fast to get little details, which counteracts the purpose of reading I suppose.

I understand about the announcements. Hey, I'll be in town on the 1st. Maybe I can come by some time while I'm around to say hi.

oops, my comment was completely wrong. i meant to write that stuff about _always coming home_, which i like much better than the disposessed.

and yeah, you should totally stop by when you're around! though maybe call or email about a specific time, cause we might be going camping some time around that date.

Maybe email me your contact info. Moxie probably still has your phone number in his phone, but he's currently missing in action.

Is Gender Necessary? avitzur July 28 2007, 23:34:06 UTC
Check out Is Gender Necessary? (on Google books).

Le Guin writes about gender issues in The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), both her thinking in 1976 when she first wrote the essay, and her radical re-thinking in 1987.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it wouldn't let me see all the pages, but I guess I gathered enough. In the intro to the edition of TLHoD I read, LeGuin writes about how storytelling is like lying, and like experimenting. In this article, she again talks about how novel-writing is like staging an experiment. Create a planet where gender is not at all an issue, and see what happens. I have been envying this thing that fiction writers seem to be able to do--- create characters and then just describe how they interact as if they are actually observing it. I think I'm slow to understand how that works.
