My horn

Well, I was curious about my new horn, so I sent an email to the manufacturer asking for information:

Hi. I just bought a Paxman horn at an antique shop. It's in very good
condition, but I would like to know more about the instrument.

It has five valves, and there is a tiny number stamped on the bell, just
above the first bracket - 1159. Does this signify anything?

I have a photo, uploaded here:

I am not a horn player (yet) - I played trombone in my youth - but since
purchasing this extraordinary instrument I have committed myself to
learning to play it. Although it has clearly seen a lot of use, it is in
excellent condition and sounds wonderful.

Today I received a response:

Hi Andrew,

We can trace that horn back to November 1959 when it was built although the details we have are very vague.

Essentially if we were to build this horn today, it would be a Paxman Model 13, a single Bb horn with an A valve (stopping valve, it helps when hand-stopping) and a built in F extension (this is the lever where your little finger will be resting).  The use of the F extension is for the lower open harmonics on the F side as they can be farily sharp when played solely on the Bb horn.

I hope that gives a little help and interest in your horn.

Kind regards,

How cool is that?
