For the past two years, whenever I visit my parents, I've said goodbye to our dog, Jasper. Once he hit fifteen, I figured any further time he had was limited. Now he's seventeen, this ridiculous bionic dog who somehow manages to keep on going. He even managed to pop his own dislocated hip back into place ( Read more... )

oh sweetie, i can imagine what you're going through...

my family had a wonderful cat, Justine, for nearly 19(!!) years before she finally left, and in her last year or so, i had much the same thoughts as you've expressed. the poor thing was also deaf at the end (though i think her sight was still alright) and would howl and howl in the middle of the night, not able to hear us calling to her.

she loved us so very, very much, and we loved her right back. through those 18 and a half years, she was, in turns, like an indulgent daughter, sister and mother to me and my sister, and i'll always love her and be grateful to have shared her life.

i'm so glad Jasper still knows you, and that you can still make him happy just by being there. love him as much as you can, while you can.

and don't be ashamed of your sadness when the time comes. it's been 3 years since Justine died, and we've had a wonderful new (well, slightly-used ;-D) cat for 2 of those years, but i still weep sometimes, thinking of her (crap, i am now!)

>massive hugs<

My childhood dog died about two weeks before I went to Iowa in 2007. It broke my heart. Nothing really made it better for a while, though we knew it was coming. You sound like you've worked this out, even though it doesnt seem to help very much.

"With so much love in my life, why does the thought of losing Jasper's hurt so badly?" Because he's still your puppy. 15, 17, it doesnt matter. He's always going to be your puppy.

I'm glad that, even without some of his sensory equipment, he knows you. He knows YOU and he knows you're there and he loves you.

When he passes, I dont know if there will be dogs that love you, but I have no doubt in my mind that there WILL BE dogs that love you. Dog people should have dogs, I'm sure you will when you can, and they will adore you in the way that only dogs can.

When it comes, do the best you can and take care of yourself. Call if you want. Love you muchly darlin.

My boyfriend lost his dog when we first met and I gave him as many extra cuddles as I could. Hug it out.
