Serena and Blair went to the Central Park Zoo and ate ice cream cones on a bench. The brunette obviously got chocolate. Then they spent the rest of their afternoon wandering around and enjoying the foreign animals that inhabited the zoo. Serena loved to watch the childlike wonder in Blair's as they walked through the zoo. What Serena loved even more was the fact that Blair would not stop grasping her larger hand. At times, the blonde would look at their hands entwined. She took note on how Blair's small hand seemed to fit perfectly into hers. Time flew and soon the sun was setting as the zoo ranger came through ushering everyone out as closing time descended.
"I liked the otters the best." Blair said swinging their hands as they meandered about the numerous walking paths.
"I know. You always like the otters the best." Serena laughed lightly. The aquatic mammal had been the brunette's favorite since they were children. It was always a challenge to get the brunette to move onto the next exhibit.
"Yeah well, I know what I like." Blair smirked.
"Oh yeah? What else do you like?" Serena asked.
"Chocolate. Shopping, cats, dancing, um... sunsets." Blair said as she pulled the blonde into a gazebo that overlooked a lake facing into the west were the sun was falling below the horizon. The sky was an assortment of soft pinks and oranges giving way to a deep purple flecked with stars. Serena could not recall a more beautiful sunset or was it because she had not taken the time in a while to enjoy one or was it because of her beautiful companion.
"I also like you." Blair said a little quieter. Serena was a little stunned by that.
"I like you too B." was all she could manage to say. She found staring into endless brown eyes. She could just lean down and there lips would brush but Serena pulled away.
"It looks like rain." Serena changed the subject looking to the east. A cool breeze was coming from the direction as well as some ominous clouds.
"Yeah." Blair agreed sounding vaguely disappointed.
"Want to go back to my place and order Chinese?" Serena asked. She would very much like to have Blair in her bed again, in a completely platonic way, of course.
"Sounds good, I want to finish watching this." Blair said dreamily looking at the fading sun.
"Okay" Serena smiled watching Blair fondly. The two girls sat in the gazebo talking until the dark had taken over and for some time after talking about everything and nothing. It seemed like they could be in that moment forever, away from the rest of the world. Perfectly preserved in the night air.
"Today was such a perfect day. I am glad I spent it with you." Blair said shyly.
"Okay Lou Reed." Serena teased.
"Shut up." Blair said swatting Serena's arm lightly.
"I'm sorry. My day was perfect too." Serena said honestly. There was a pause. Serena held her breath. She could tell Blair now. She could let the those three word, and eight letters slip from her lips and she would be free from her secret. As much as she did not want to ruin the relationship she had reestablished with the small girl, she knew she could never truly be happy until Blair was hers completely. Or at least try her damnedest.
"B..." Serena began but a flash from the sky diverted her attention. Perking up she realized the the wind was picking up, the clouds had moved in and were not looming over head.
"Looks like the rain is here." Blair said as a low rumble sounded through the night.
"Yeah, we should get going I suppose." Serena said disappointed that her moment slipped away.
"I suppose." Blair mimicked but before they could leave the safety of the gazebo the rain suddenly began to fall.
"Well shit." the blonde laughed. Blair giggled with her as they watched the rain pour. Serena was suddenly struck with an idea.
"You know... We have gone through all of your favorites today. Shopping, chocolate, otters, sunsets." Serena said in a deliberate manner.
"That is true all that is missing is cats and dancing." Blair said sounding curious.
"Well let's fix part of that." Serena said. Blair watched her questioningly as the blonde slipped out of her boots. Serena smiled at the brunette as she stepped into the wet grass, almost instantly becoming soaked.
"Serena!" Blair exclaimed in shock. Serena simply extended her hand to the brunette.
"Dance with me." she practically whispered. Blair took a moment to respond but eventually a small smile appeared on her face as she stepped out of her flats and put her hand into Serena's. She bust out laughing as the blonde spun her in the rain. The rain was surprisingly warm as the best friends twirled in the rain. Serena could not take her eyes off the brunette. Her was darker and sexily clung to her face. Her dress stuck to her small frame leaving little to the imagination. Blair's eye make up smudged as the rain ran down her cheeks. It reminded Serena of the tears she shed which prompted her to attempt to wipe them away. The blonde noticed how Blair shivered when she touched her.
"Are you cold?" Serena asked. Blair only has to slightly nod and the the seizes the opportunity to pull the brunette close, wrapping her arms around the slender waist in front of her. Serena felt two arms snake around her neck and a head rest on her shoulder. The blonde thought her heart was going to burst with joy as they swayed in the rain with Blair humming a nameless tune for them to dance to. The petite girl had a beautiful singing voice. Serena constantly was telling her she should share it with the world but Blair stubbornly refused. Despite the brunette's confident exterior, she was terribly shy.
"Thank you... for today." Blair smiled up at the the blonde. Serena could not hold it in anymore as she looked down into the trusting eyes of her best friend. She could not lie anymore.
"Don't thank me yet." Serena smiled at her sadly.
"What do you mean?" Blair asked confused.
"Blair... I have something... to confess." Serena said nervously.
"You can tell me anything S. You know that." Blair said as she halted their movements.
"Blair you are so important to me. I do not want to lose you. Promise me that you will not push me away after I tell you." Serena asked her voice cracking slightly. Was that the rain that was stinging her eyes or were those tears?
"Serena you are scaring me a little." Blair said becoming nervous and stepping out of Serena's arms.
"Just promise me." Serena whispered. The brunette nodded.
"I promise." Blair whispered.
"Blair I have recently developed these... feelings. And it is going to be shocking to say the least..." Serena started before stopping short not sure what she wanted to say next.
"S, please. You are killing me with this." Blair said frustrated.
"I know. It is just... I am scared too." Serena admitted.
"Serena, we will get through this. Whatever it is we will through it together. I mean... look how far we have come." Blair said softly as she grasped the blonde's hand. The two girls stood in the rain at the brink of the moment that could change there lives forever.
"You know how Aaron and I broke up?" Serena asked.
"You said you guys got into a fight and broke up." Blair nodded.
"Well I left out a detail... The fight, our argument. It was... about you." Serena disclosed. Blair's brow wrinkled with confusion.
"Wait. What does that mean?" Blair said shaking her head.
"He really wanted me to go to South America. When you called, I had to be there for you. I could not leave you like that. He pretty made me choose between you and him." Serena explained.
"S, I am sorry he turned out to be such a jerk." Blair sympathized.
"That is just it." Serena began to pace. "I didn't, don't care. I realized that it would always be you. Aaron was everything I should have wanted in a boyfriend but I still wanted to leave him. I was going through all these boys and I was never really happy. But with you I am always happy." Serena said.
"I am always happy with you too." Blair smiled.
"But it is more than that. B... I love you." Serena stopped in front of the brunette. Blair looked shocked a moment but quickly shook out of it.
"I love you too S." she said. Serena could tell the meaning had escaped the brunette.
"No. B. You are smart and funny and lovely and so damn sexy. I am deepy, unequivocally in love with you." Serena proclaimed her love for her best friend as she finally gave way to tears. Serena's heart sunk as she watched the brown-eyed girl simply gape at her. She could not tell if the brunette was crying or not on account of the rain.
"You can go now. You can run. I understand." Serena said defeated as her tears still fell. But to Serena's surprise, Blair stayed. Serena's eyes followed the brunette as she closed her mouth and slowly walked so that she stood within an inch of the blonde. Serena's heart began to race as Blair's lips hovered next to hers.
"I love you too." Blair whispered with all her heart. Serena could not take the proximity anymore. She grabbed Blair's hips so that their bodies were pressed tightly together. Serena leaned down and desperately kissed the brunette. Blair kissed back with equal fervor as her hands began entangled in the blonde's long hair. Serena ran her tongue across the smaller girl's soft bottom lip seeking entrance into her mouth. Blair gladly opened her mouth as there tongues caressed one another. Serena thought that the brunette tasted like strawberries. She thought her skin was impossibly smooth. Everything about Blair was intoxicating. Serena never felt more elated than in that moment. She was finally complete as she let her thoughts go and got lost in the kiss.
