My parents cut down almost all the trees in their yard because the guy that removed the downed trees after hurricane Rita said their root systems were damaged and another storm could blow them over. Some were leaning.
You were luck about your car. The tree was right next to it. You're lucky your carport is still standing too. Whew! Close one! Someone was watching you for you guys. :)

One, was that on almost EVERY single surface that would have been hit by wind in the same direction that the tree fell was either plastered with leaves (it looked as if someone had just taken a bunch of leaves and glued them onto the car, the shed, the fence, the house...and it was only on one side) or plastered with specks of dirt. So it doesn't show that the wind circulated, it just looked like a wall of wind hit it. Kind of interesting to look at, really.
And yes, someone was watching out for us that night, no doubt about that. ^_^
