First of all, who on earth had the idea to turn Gormenghast into a stage play? Okay, so they managed Lord of the Rings, but I hear it was with questionable success.

And that sounds just awful. Steerpike is a compelling character, I think, but he's far from likeable. Even Jonathan Rhys Meyers couldn't make me like him, though he did make some of Steerpike's actions comprehensible if not necessarily a Good Thing. I believe I shall stick to the BBC miniseries and the novels.

Who would have the temporary insanity to adapt Gormenghast into a stage play?

Oh, just let me tell you.

The author is named John Crow and is a self proclaimed shaman who channels dead medieval prostitutes and calls them his "Winchester Geese."

This and many other salient details about his raising the dead and walking around Vancouver with a big stick were in the programme which we all read before the show and yet still stuck around.

Steerpike is a tricky role because throughout the books and especially in the miniseries he is our quasi-protagonist and I was torn between wanting him to light the entire castle on fire and BBQ every last one of the royal family and shouting at the television for him being a reprehensible villainous villain.

But Jonathan Rhys Meyers almost carries it off. Mostly thanks to his boyish good looks. :)

You dodged a bullet there.

Yeah.

My faith in the UBC theatre programme is gone.

It cannot possibly be worse than Minkowsky's rape of La Belle Helene at Le Chatelet, which some unimaginable moron thought good enough for preservation on a DVD. The difference is that you saw something meant to convey anger, and you ended up laughing; I watched something meant to make you laugh out loud - and within the first five minutes, I was mad enough to execute the producer and everyone who had allowed him to slaughter Offenbach, there and then, with my bare hands. There are things you cannot possibly imagine until you have seen them.
