On October 31, a Syriac Catholic cathedral in Baghdad was bombed, killing at least 58 people and wounding 78 more.

Will do. But we should not despair, because "the blood of the martyrs are the seed of the Church." :)

If you're interested, the Fides News Agency compiles a list of Catholics killed while doing pastoral/mission work in 2009. This doesn't include all the folks killed for being Catholic, just the ones killed while doing work for the Church.

Also, she wasn't killed, but a good friend of mine from high school (the leader of our FCA) was severely beaten and tied to a cross on the ground during freshman year of college. On the campus of a Christian university. In Virginia.

No idea. I only knew about it because she told our mutual friend, who asked the rest of us to pray for the whole situation.
