What is artbeta?
This community was created to have artists help artists. Artists beta artworks in progress for other artists to help them with problem areas, improving technique, giving advice and so forth.

What does 'beta' mean?
definition adapted from Loony-archivist.
The term "Beta Reader" originated in computer software. "Beta Testers" and "Beta Readers" reviewed software before its release, to check for bugs, critique ease of use, and basically test it to make sure it worked. Online fan fiction adopted the term several years ago to refer to volunteering copy and content editors who preview a story and provide critical and constructive feedback to help the author whip a story into shape before it is published online.

We at artbeta have decided that artists sometimes also need betas for their works in progress. If you:
  • want to offer artistic advice/ideas/suggestions/tutorials
  • have work in progress art that needs to be beta'd
  • both!
--then this is the place for you! The more participation you provide, the better this comm will be!

What is a work in progress (WIP)? What is finished art?
A WIP is art that the artist intends on working on to get it to a point of satisfaction. A finished work of art is a piece that the artist has no intention of fixing/changing; in other words, it is done.

What are the requirements for joining artbeta?
1) You must be over 16-years old. This journal may have adult content.
2) You must be an artist. While we appreciate that non-artists can provide great critique, we would prefer that this particular area of the art process be strictly artists-only.

What kind of 'artist' do you mean?
artbeta is a community designed for artists who draw by hand (aka illustrated) - digital or tradtional. Unfortunately, we cannot provide beta services for graphics, photomanips, photography, 3D models or vidding.

What kind of art can I post here?
  • Any art that is hand-drawn is accepted. We may make exceptions for other fine art, such as sculpting.
  • Art MUST be a work in progress. Please do not post published/completed art.
  • Multifandom art! Post art from any fandom.
  • Original art! It doesn't have to be fandom-based.
artbeta is a slash, gen and het friendly community.
artbeta welcomes LGBT and PoC artwork and artists.

What else can I post here?
General art questions, tutorials, guides - anything to do with improving art is welcome.

How do I join artbeta?
Fill out your request form HERE, then click on the Userinfo page to join the comm. This comm is moderated invitations so we can art- and age- verify first.

HOW DO I POST MY WIP ART TO ARTBETA?
Please copy and paste this when posting your WIP:

Fandom:
Characters:
Rating: (if R or NC17, list reasons why)
Medium:
Link or LJ-Cut: (please post only WIPs)
Problematic Areas:

When asking fellow artists to beta your work, feel free to specify what exactly you need help with. However, if you really have no idea what's wrong but it just feels wrong, you don't have to say anything more than that.

I'm sensitive about my art, is this the place for me?
We understand that your art is very personal. This community is for constructive, helpful critique on all aspects of art: technique, perspective, colour, anatomy, composition and more. Critique is done by your artistic peers. If you don't do well under constructive critique, this is not the place for you.

Can I just lurk and learn?
You don't need to respond to every post, but some degree of participation is good. Remember: we are ALL artists who want to learn and improve. This community is specifically designed for interaction with other artists - post your art, beta others art, or do both.

I'm in a secret exchange fest for my fandom - I need to keep anonymous but I want my art beta'd! What do I do?
No worries! DO NOT post the artwork. Simple explain your situation and ask for beta volunteer email contacts. Make sure to let people know as much information as possible - the fandom (if possible), the areas you need help in, etc.

Who are the Moderators?
