Need anatomy help!

Hey, there.

Ok, so I'm about 2 hours into this John/Rodney painting, and I know the anatomy is off in Rodney's face and John's hands (which are shapeless blobs right now. His left is suposed to be resting on his hip, and his right just barely cupping Rodney's face ( Read more... )

The biggest problem I see is the fact that John's legs are cut off halfway down his shin. If they continued the way they should, he'd be standing in front of Rodney.

Hmmm... How can I change his position so that he's standing behind rodney? (I must have screwed the pose up... I'm drawing from a source pic, but changed rodney's legs. That must have thrown me off...)

Easiest way I can think of would be to make John bend over Rodney more, while moving the feet/legs back so the feet are where they're supposed to be. If you do that, though, it might be best to move the hand-on-his-hips elsewhere. It would look kinda awkward if you left it there. If you need more help, feel free to ask. ^^

Hmm... I have to say that I don't think I"m a good enough artist to pull that one off. I have to use photo reference to even get this far, and just don't know if i can do it without a reference. I'll try...

Also: his neck seems a bit massive, but that might just be because you haven't really added deep shadows to the back of it...

I'll leave this image up for a few days, then take it down - you can copy it to your hard disk if you find it helpful :)

I think you're right about the mouth. Something elese is bothering me about the mouth, but I can't figure it out yet. And I think his forehead is too slopey....

Re: neck; yeah, I think it's because I did't shade john because I know his anatomy is wrong. I can hope, anyway!

And yes, that looks better. I (with help!) am redrafting john's body position entirely.
