Under My Skin
"Unless you have something concrete, you have to release Ms. Watkins, Logan." ADA Kent packed up her briefcase and strolled out of the observation room.
Ross looked between Logan and Wheeler before raising his eyebrows. "Let her go." He stuffed his hands in his suitcoat pocket and headed back to his office.
Defeated, Logan stormed back to his desk and collapsed in the chair with a snarl. Barek and Morasca glanced up from their spots, glancing from Logan to each other and back. Turning in her seat, Morasca caught a glimpse of Wheeler talking to Chesley Watkins and decided she was suddenly craving chocolate. When she got up and headed for the vending machine, Barek didn't so much as ask. Logan, however, knew better.
"Hey, Barek. Where'd your partner go?"
"Vending machine."
Brows knit, Logan stared off in that direction before deciding to get chocolate too.
Turning with the bag of M&M's in hand, Morasca cursed when she bumped into an older woman and had bent down to pick up her purse. "Sorry about that. I'm clumsy." Passing the purse off to Chesley, she quirked a brow.
The gears turning in her head, Chesley slowly smiled. It was a dark, sinister smile - the one she'd used on Logan before demanding a lawyer the year before. "How old were you when Detective Logan corrupted you?"
Her lip curled a bit. How did Chesley know about her and Logan? Deciding it was a tactic to get under her skin, Morasca smiled tightly. "You felt no guilt at all when you sent your boys to massacre those families. Has anyone ever told you that you're sick?"
"How old were you when you lost your family?"
Tight smile turning into a dark, sinister one like Chesley's, Morasca stepped closer to her. Her eyes were steely and behind them burned a raging fire. "You've run out of children now, Chesley. Empty nest, the boys are gone! No more! You're alone, Chesley. You're so very, very alone now." Voice dripping with a venomous malice, her lips curled into a smirk. "Does that scare you?"
"This much rage is unhealthy, dear. What did your father do to you? It's why you cling to Detective Logan, isn't it?" Unflinching, Chesley's tone indicated otherwise. Morasca's tactics were working, and the subtle fluctuations in Chesley's voice gave her away completely. Logan ran into the hallway and then Chesley fixated on him. "You've turned this young woman into a monster."
"You're the monster, Chesley." Taking another step, Morasca got in Chesley's face, still smirking like a madman. It was... scary, even to Logan. "You made those boys use machetes to kill innocent people. You abandoned them, turning one in so your boys could kill him. Three of them are dead because of you. The other two will be soon because of you. Loneliness scares you, it's why you take in these little boys. Did your mommy touch you as a little girl? Is that why you only like boys? I'm willing to bet you were so lonely you would let your little boys lay in bed with you so you could touch them like she touched you."
"I never touched those boys like that!" Chesley shouted, outraged. "I was a good mother and I loved my boys. Your Detective Logan took them away from me."
Brows knit, Logan took a cautious step forward, his eyes on Morasca the entire time.
"It was the only way to get them to stay connected with you. By loving them and feeding them guilt so they'd never tell and never leave. But they left, as all boys do and you were scared. You were so scared, weren't you? So you tracked them down, you laid the guilt on thick and you had them break into those houses and kill those people and steal that art for a few bucks so you could support yourself and they would never leave! Didn't you?!" Her voice rose a notch, still vicious.
"My boys loved me and I never made them do anything like that."
"Logan shot one of them, so you had to lay on the guilt thick. That's your game - you prey on weaknesses and you exploit them like the psychopath you are. You use guilt and pain to gain loyalty. When betrayed, you use violence and destruction to exact revenge and clean up your mess. You're a sick monster and you've raised monsters just like you. Two can play this game Chesley. You raised your siblings. Your mother was sick, wasn't she? And your little sister just wouldn't listen to her. It just made her sicker and sicker until she died. When they left you had no one to take care of until you got married. Then your husband died, leaving you all alone. You just had to be a mommy so you took in these little boys and turned them into monsters. Just so you wouldn't be alone. Because you're afraid to be alone."
Chesley took a step back and shook her head. "My boys aren't monsters. I made them do it because I raised them to respect their mother. They listened to mother, they're not monsters. Monsters don't listen to mother."
Logan stared in awe as Morasca had a uni cuff Chesley and Mirandize her before taking her to booking. "Anna?"
"Logan." Tiredly, she turned on her heel and headed for an empty interview room.
Seeing his protegee hunched over in a chair, Logan slipped in and closed the door behind him. Her shoulders were slumped and her hair was a bit mussed. "Anna... what was that?" Pulling out a chair, he sat right next to her, placing a hand on her back.
"Profiling in action. You have to get inside a criminal's mind to catch them in their lie. Bobby taught me that." Glancing up, that fire was gone - her eyes dull and glazed over, her voice empty of emotion. "She's going to jail for killing those families now and she can't hurt you anymore."
"Jesus, kid..." His gaze softened as he pulled her into his arms, a bit afraid of this - he hadn't seen her like this in years. "Not for me, Anna... killing yourself for me..."
Tears brimming in her eyes, she met Logan's eyes with her own. "People like Chesley Watkins destroy lives and take families from children. She deserves to rot in prison for what she's done."
Behind the glass, Ross and Barek watched. Ross looked confused as Barek smiled softly. "Anna lost her family thirteen years ago. Mike kept an eye on her when she had no one left."
"She did this because her family was killed." Ross observed, eyes still trained on two of his best detectives.
"Mike is the only family she has and when Chesley got away last year, Anna was the person he went to. She's seen the way Chesley gets under Mike's skin and that's why she did it. To protect her family." Barek left the observation room, letting Ross have some time with his thoughts.
It was a surprise, really. Detective Mike Logan, the hot-tempered playboy who punched a city councilman and was rumored to have slept with half the female population now over 40 in Manhattan - taking a young woman under his wing? Turns out Ross didn't know his detective as well as he had thought, and he was only certain it would lead to more surprises down the road. Morasca and Logan, he thought, guess the rumors were true. My detectives are something else. Big brother Logan... who would've known?
