Has anyone seen the exhibit Imperishable Beauty: Art Nouveau Jewelry that runs through November 8th at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston? It's supposed to have some great Lalique and Fouquet, but sometimes I think jewellery just doesn't show that well in a museum and is too hard to see in a popular exhibit. So I'm curious whether it's a good show as ( Read more... )

I'm going to the exhibit on Friday so I can post about it next week. The Lalique exhibit at the Smithsonian a few years back was very well staged with the jewelry being easy to see. I find the secret to popular shows is to go during the week rather than the weekend if you can. If not, be there when the museum opens.

I don't remember a Lalique exhibit. I do remember the big Art Nouveau show at the National Gallery of Art (near the Smithsonians) that had the Lalique dragonfly pin. Which museum had a Lalique show? I'd love to see if I can find the catalog--that must have been a great collection.

I'm with you on the weekday thing. It's just so hard to view jewellery I think in part because it's meant to be more intimate. Unless you can get as close to an object in a case as you can to its hypothetical wearer at a cocktail party, it's sort of a bust.

This was a decade ago so it was before the Art Nouveau show. It was a traveling exhibition that started at Cooper Hewitt in NYC and then was at the Ripley Center here in DC. I used to see the catalog show up on remainder tables but it has been a few years. The Jewels of Lalique - http://antiquesandthearts.com/archive/lalique.htm The book is gorgeous - just about every page is a color plate.

The website for the Art Nouveau show at National Gallery is still online and definitely worth digging through.

Thanks so much! I will definitely add that catalogue to my in-search-of list

I grew up in DC and the NGA Art Nouveau show was my introduction. It was truly amazing, and really I think covered a lot of ground. I don't think I could have had a better way to fall in love with Art Nouveau.
