Unfortunately, as my friend JF noted, we students do not judge or experience time in the standard measurements of the movement of our planet with respect to the sun, but in how much work we have to do in an interim between two events. Before I can leave, I've got a term paper (the second part of which is now five days overdue) and a final exam in philosophy, one quiz and a final in Chinese, a test and a final exam in logic, a reader response, a presentation, a final paper, and a final exam in English, all the planning, shopping, and paperwork I still have to do for my study abroad, and moving out of the dorm to take care of. :(
Oh well, it's not a big deal. At least I can laugh at myself for being a melodramatic wimp with a perpetually bad attitude. :D Humor is crucial.
A typical exchange between my multiple personalities: A: I've wasted almost all my time and opportunities in the past twenty years.
You're going awaaaay! I sorta want to go too. if only to force myself to remember my highschool Spanish. hehe I hope you have fun there!! We need to do something before you leave. when are you free? If ever. you could finally show me that Indian restaurant you like. and we could do something else fun that you can't do in Costa Rica. yaay
shikata ga naiYou don't have to already speak Spanish, silly; you can study it there! I know... you can be a stowaway in my luggage (j/k, of course). Actually, I don't remember any of my high school Spanish either, but I'm going to take two one-credit courses in Spanish in addition to the two three-credit ecology courses and one one-credit environmental science course that will be my foci
( ... )
well,i beliiieve i'm free the 20th. I don't have a final that day... If you're available, we could hang out then. we'll do whateeever you want since this is your last time in nyc for a good long while. :)
i know you don't actually need to know the language for certain study abroad things, but it gets very frustrating when you can't communicate with the natives. i tried to resort to using spanish in Italy. It worked better than english anyway...
hopefully i'll see you sooooon! i talk like we live miles apart. hehe also, you could bring other people along, of course. if you'd like. rar
People develop a "the grass is greener..." feeling for virtually any situation. I really hope you enjoy your trip and get to experience an environment completely different from our own. Every place has its good and bad qualities though. Perhaps your trip will help you appreciate the city more.
That's what I'm thinking, too, although I hope that I'll just love a place for once. I expect that I'll miss the familiarity and conveniences (like speaking the same language as most of the population), the food, and the few people in my life whom I see more than every few months.
If Alicia (my sis) lends her camera to me, then I will. =)
I have some feelings like that for Ohio - it's family, but I'm sick of it, yet so familiar with it that I don't know what else to do. I've had a taste of Other places (living in New York for almost three years) but right now I'm in the middle of a "Where the hell do I belong" sort of feeling. I keep thinking that I need to head west, maybe to Seattle. Something about Seattle is calling to me, though it just might be because Lara is going there, and Pfil is going there, and all these other people around our age are heading there.
It's like an artsy/geek exodus.
I really hope that you like Costa Rica. I think it could, potentially, be the best thing you've ever done-at least as far as getting a real "experience" out of something.
