Al was aware that there was a dull kind of ache in his head, and also that the light wherever he was was bright enough to sting, even through closed lids. His eyebrows drew together, slightly, and he squinted as he blinked his eyes open. He felt a little disoriented, but awake

For the first time in hours, Edward had finally fallen asleep. He had done so, however, in a very strange position -- kneeling beside Al's bed, with his head pillowed on the matress beside his brother's shoulder, gold hair spilling over the sheets and down his back. His left hand still loosely clasped Al's, as he slumbered.

The movement was enough to make him stir, and he startled awake rather suddenly. He tried to look around, only getting a face full of pillow as he did so, mummbling "huh"'s and "wha"s incoherently.

"Brother," Al said weakly, head falling back to the pillow, hand tightening around Ed's.

"What happened?"

Edward jerked up quickly, and regretted it immediately. Spots danced in front of his eyes, and his head ached. He winced, meaning to reach for his head with his right hand, but there was no functioning right hand to respond to his thoughts. He pried his eyes open with much effort, his breath caught in his throat.

Al's eyes were open. His eyes were open, and his brother was speaking to him, and he could feel that hand tightened around his own, and Edward almost lost it. The breath finally broke, and he gave a small, shaking laugh.

"You're awake.." he whispered, exhaled with a small, ironic sob, and rested his forehead onto Al's shoulder.

Al blinked at the top of Ed's head, eyebrows quirking up.

"Yes. How long was I out for?" He hesitated a little, because it was sinking in- if a bit belatedly- that Ed was upset, even if he was relieved.
