A Plague on Both Their Houses

Aug 09, 2010 14:03

Listening to a travel show on the radio this weekend,  I learned how venomous Italian football can get.

At a match between Verona and Naples, the fans from Verona unfurled a message to the opposition:

May Vesuvius erupt and destroy you all
In response, the Neapolitan fans held up their own banner:

Juliet was a slut

football, sport, italy

Oddly enough, but sentence "Juliet was a slut" also flew out of Riccardo's mouth when we paraded around Verona on Monday. And he is from Genova. :)

Italians can be very inventive when it comes to offend, especially the football fans. I am Sicilian and have lots of stories to tell. Unfortunately they aren't all funny.
The fans in Northern Italy often sing "Go Etna Go!" or "Welcome to Europe" whenever a Sicilian team plays there.

"Juliet was a slut"...methinks Shakespeare got it wrong!
